Match Report: Accrington Stanley 2-1 Walsall

23 December 2023

The Saddlers suffered their first defeat in five games in all competitions as Accrington Stanley walked away with all three points thanks to goals from Tommy Leigh and Joe Pritchard either side of a Freddie Draper penalty.

It took the home side just nine minutes to get themselves into the lead at the Wham Stadium. Captain Pritchard took aim from the edge of the box and his effort was parried by Jackson Smith but only into the path of Leigh who tapped home from two yards out.

The in-form Jamille Matt had a chance to equalise for Walsall after half an hour as he was slipped in by Draper but his effort was unfortunately sliced wide of the upright.

Moments later and the home side had an excellent opportunity to extend their lead through Josh Woods as he looked to capitalise on a mistake from Priestley Farquharson but his fierce low drive was well saved by Smith.

Stanley were left to rue that missed opportunity right on the stroke of half-time when Saddlers captain Donervon Daniels was taken out from behind inside the 18-yard box and referee Scott Oldham had no choice but to award Walsall a penalty.

Draper picked the ball up and stepped up to fire the ball into the bottom left corner to score his ninth goal of the season.

A minute later and Sadler’s side were nearly ahead as Ryan Stirk drilled a low cross into the box and Oisin McEntee arrived right on time but his side-footed attempt went just wide of the mark.

Just before the hour mark and the home side got themselves back in the lead as Pritchard crossed into the box but it evaded everyone, including Smith in the Saddlers goal, and found the back of the net.

As the clock ran down, the Saddlers went in search of an equaliser and nearly got it in spectacular fashion as Draper chested the ball down 15-yards out and tried an overhead kick but it was inches wide of the far post.

Despite their best efforts, Sadler's side couldn't find that equalising goal and Accrington held out to seal victory at the Wham Stadium.
