Stirk pleased to see goals coming from all over the team

30 August 2023

Walsall midfielder Ryan Stirk believes there are goals all over the team and is pleased to see plenty of players chipping in.

The 22-year-old opened his account for the Saddlers, scoring the equaliser against Grimsby Town last time out.

Stirk feels it’s important that the team doesn’t just rely on the forwards to score the goals but insists all the players are working hard to contribute.

“Everyone’s giving themselves good opportunities to score,” he said.

“Ross (Stirk) has had a few chances, Hutch (Isaac Hutchinson) scored last week so we’re not just relying on one person, we’re not just relying on the strikers to score goals – everyone is chipping in.

“It’s good that we can be that team where we’re all giving something towards the main goal which is to win games.”

The former Birmingham City midfielder was on hand to pounce in the six-yard box on Saturday.

He compared his goal to one that supporters are used to seeing Danny Johnson score but he was happy to have been given the freedom to venture forward and score for the first time in a Saddlers shirt.

“We changed formation and it gave me that license to get forward a little bit and it fell to me in the box and I put it away,” Stirk commented.

“It got us the point in the end, that’s the main thing. I said to DJ, it’s like one of his, I’ve learned it from him so it was a good goal.”

For the first time this season, there has been no midweek game for Mat Sadler’s team.

The fixture list in September is quieter and Sitrk is aiming to use that extra time on the training pitch to focus on improve in certain areas.

“We’ve got no Tuesday games in September so we’re going to be working hard in training, tighten up on the things we’re not so good at so hopefully it’s going to be a good September,” the midfielder added.
