Sadler hoping players can reset during free week

29 August 2023

Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler is hoping his players can recover and refocus this week.

For the first time this season, the Saddlers aren’t in action in midweek and attentions are now fully on the visit of Colchester United this Saturday.

Sadler’s side came from behind to earn a point against Grimsby Town at the weekend.

The Head Coach was satisfied with a point and is now looking to reset this week and build on it against the U’s.

“Since that first game we have been relentlessly full on with Saturday-Tuesday but they’ve now got the opportunity to reflect on the opening games, recover from those opening games and we refocus into next weekend,” Sadler said.

“I can’t be too displeased with a lot of things that I saw (on Saturday). Of course, there are defining moments that changed and altered the game but for my group to come back and get a point out of it, I was very pleased in the end.”

It was also a special day on Saturday for two young fans Alfie and Reggie.

Alfie, a Saddler, and Reggie, a Grimsby fan, both unfortunately suffer from complex heart conditions and they became friends after meeting through their hospital treatment.

They were both mascots for Saturday’s game and Sadler was delighted to be able to meet them.

“That was lovely, it was lovely for me personally being able to take a photo with the opposition manager who is a close friend as well,” he commented.

“Two clubs that you wouldn’t say are linked in any way but it was a nice moment to bring them together as football clubs and share an experience for the kids, the smile on their faces is something to behold.

“We will continue to be open and available to our fans and other fans of other clubs and we’ll be open to that because it’s the right thing to do and we realise the effect we can have. Two brilliant kids and it was lovely to see the smiles on their faces. Alfie will hopefully come up to the training ground, I’ve offered his mom the opportunity for that and we’d love him to come up.”
