Mat Sadler looking to grasp the opportunity to bounce back

7 August 2023

Walsall Head Coach is focused on grasping the opportunity to bounce back from Saturday’s opening day defeat to Morecambe when his team take on Championship side Blackburn Rovers in the Carabao Cup tomorrow evening.

The Saddlers suffered late heartache against the Shrimps who edged out Saturday’s encounter with a 93rd minute winner from Farrend Rawson.

Attention now switches to the Carabao Cup and the team have the chance to test themselves against Championship opposition.

Sadler is keen to see his side stick to their principles and continue to build on what they’ve worked on throughout pre-season but he’s pleased to have the chance to bounce back quickly.

“It’s another opportunity to win a football match,” Sadler said.

“It’s all part of the process for us, we just get back to what we believe in and get back to what we want to do with it.

“I’ll look into that and get deep into Blackburn, I’m sure there will be changes to their line-up for the game and we’ll have to assess what we do to it.

“We’ll think about us and be ready to approach and attack another game.”

The Saddlers were without Tom Knowles and Freddie Draper on Saturday.

Knowles was missing through injury while Draper is serving a suspension and will also be unavailable for tomorrow night’s contest.

Another player who missed the weekend trip to Morecambe was Priestley Farquharson and Sadler provided an update on his situation.

“It was at the open training session (last week), he just felt his groin slightly,” Sadler revealed.

“It’s not as bad as we were worried that it would be so we’re talking days rather than weeks for Priestley but unfortunately, he wasn’t quite ready (for Saturday).

"I’m a big believer in opportunity knocks and I thought Harry (Williams) did really well.

“We look forward to having Priestley back when he is but I was really pleased with Harry with what he did for us.”
