McEntee hoping to build on solid base

12 April 2023

Walsall defender Oisin McEntee was pleased with the way the team stuck together against Carlisle United and feels they now have a good foundation to build on ahead of this weekend’s trip to Crewe Alexandra.

The 22-year-old put in a fine performance to help the Saddlers, who had to play half an hour with 10 men, keep a clean sheet against Paul Simpson's promotion chasing side.

McEntee is now hoping the team can add some goals but was encouraged with how they restricted Carlisle despite being a man down.

“We were very solid at the back, limiting their chances,” he said.

“They’re obviously going to get chances having the extra player but I thought we dealt with it well.

“When you go down to 10 men, everyone works that bit harder and I thought the lads were excellent.

“Everyone ran for each other, stuck together and even coming towards the end we got a few chances from running and working hard.

“It was a collective effort, the fans were brilliant, the lads off the bench were brilliant and everyone stuck together.

“It’s obviously the base to build on and I think the goals will come. (Monday) was tough because we had 10 men for half an hour but we still had chances. Hopefully, we’ll take them next time.”

It’s been a tough season for the Irishman who suffered a shoulder injury in the summer that kept him out until November and has had to fight for his place.

He’s keen to finish the season strongly having now played 10 times for the Saddlers and is feeling good after a solid performance.

“I felt comfortable,” he commented.

“First half was weird because of the wind and the sun but I think I built myself into the game and did well second half so I’m happy with that.

“We all just want to finish the season strongly and build on that.”
