Interim Head Coach Mat Sadler looks ahead to Crawley Town challenge

28 April 2023

Interim Head Coach Mat Sadler believes tomorrow’s opponents Crawley Town are playing better than their league position suggests and is expecting a difficult test.

The Red Devils all but confirmed their League Two survival with a 2-0 victory against second bottom Hartlepool United last weekend and know they will be mathematically safe if they pick up a point against the Saddlers or Hartlepool fail to win.

Sadler has called on his team to stick together and impose their game on Crawley but he’s wary of their threats and has been impressed by Scott Lindsey’s side.

“Scott’s got them playing with real intensity, real dynamism in forward areas especially,” he said.

“They’ve got some really good attacking players and Scott’s got them playing on the front foot.

“For me, I’ve watched five or six games of theirs, they’re not a team in my opinion that should be fighting at that end of the table with the way they’re playing at the moment so it will be a really tough game for us.

“They’ll be galvanised by that result and it’s up to us to impose ourselves on that game, weather storms when storms will come for sure.

“Be together, that’s the main message of last week and it goes into this week’s message as well. We have to be together and ride some of those moments out together and impose our game on it.”

Sadler, alongside Richard O’Kelly, have enjoyed their first full week on the training pitch with the players.

It has given them the opportunity to get key messages across to the players and Sadler has found it to be productive week.

“It’s been a really positive week,” he commented.

“The lads have really bought in to what Rich and I have put out to them and I think they’ve enjoyed it, that freshness of different voices has helped that but it’s been really bright, really good tempo to things and there’s been a lot of detail that we’ve tried to put into them so it’s been a really positive week.

“I think it’s been a lot more organised because the back end of last week was chaotic for many different reasons but it’s been good to be able to organise the week properly and get the detail that we want out of the week.

“Training has been really bright and sharp in the days we’ve been in. Monday and Tuesday’s sessions were great, Thursday’s session really spot on and we go into another tactical session today so it’s been a really positive week, the lads have really bought into it.

“I keep eluding to those positives, it’s been good to be able to bounce stuff off Richard and we’ve been a good foil for each other.”
