Michael Flynn pleased with productive week of preparations

30 September 2022

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn feels the team have enjoyed a productive week both on the pitch and also at a Boxing gym as they prepare for tomorrow’s trip to Stockport County.

With no midweek game, the Saddlers have been working hard every day this week as they look to end their winless run.

Flynn has been pleased with the attitude of the players as they’ve embraced all the challenges this week and felt the players have benefitted from a new activity this week.

“We wanted a little change of scenery because they were in every day this week,” Flynn said,

“We’ve been to a local gym in Willenhall and it’s good for the players to get out and see what the area is about and it was a different type of training that would challenge them mentally as well.

“They had a good time; they were still sore yesterday from aching arms and there were a couple who weren’t bad at it to be honest. Taylor Allen, his dad is an ex-fighter and he was very good technically, Donervon Daniels was good, (Brandon) Comley was alright so there were a couple who surprised me, it was good to see.

“It has been productive but it’s what we do on the Saturday in the games. We’ve got a good group and a group of players who care about this football club.

“They are not happy with the run of results and they’ve responded in the right way. They’ve been in every day this week, no days off, no moaning or feeling sorry for themselves so it has been a good week on the training pitch.”

The Saddlers have been working hard to try and get back to winning ways.

One frustration has been the number of injuries.

Flynn provided an update on the progress of Oisin McEntee and Joe Riley on their progress but received more frustrating news on Jack Earing who limped off during last weekend’s match against Tranmere Rovers.

“It’s a nightmare, the injury curse continues,” Flynn commented.

“He (Earing) is out for possibly 12 weeks. We just got him back in terms of fully fit and he has an injury with no one around him and he’s done his ankle ligament.

“We’ve not had one muscle injury yet which shows that the training we’re doing is bang on but we’re just cursed with injuries at the minute.

“Joe (Riley) has had his injection so he’s got to stay off it for a clear week so we’ll have to see how he responds next Wednesday. Oisin has trained non-contact but he’s still a few weeks off returning to contact so there’s not good news there in the short term.”
