Michael Flynn: Draw was probably a fair result

14 September 2022

Saddlers Head Coach Michael Flynn believes a draw was a fair result against Colchester United on Tuesday night and admitted that he was much happier with his sides performance in the second half compared to the first half showing.

Walsall fell behind after just two minutes when Frank Nouble bundled the ball home after a mix up in defence but Flynn’s side regrouped in the second half as Tom Knowles scored his first goal since joining the Club in the summer.

On the balance of play, Flynn felt as though the result was a fair one for both sides but was encouraged by the second half and feels as though his side possibly did enough to get more than a point.

“After our first half performance I have got to say yes (the result was fair) because at half time I didn’t see us getting anything out of the game,” said Flynn.

“We started poorly and got progressively worse as it went on. It was probably the worst half of football with me in charge here that I have had.

“We got booed off and rightly so and we have let another team off the hook because we give them something to hang on to.

“I wish we could get some of the goals given to us from the opposition but then you look at the second half, it was a game that we could have comfortably won and got the three points.

“I thought Andy Williams stopped them getting free headers, he stopped the ball coming back constantly. In the first half we lost every first contact, every second contact, players didn’t have the bottle to get on the ball.

“The goal we conceded was farcical and I won’t dress it up, you know I won’t but as much as I am going to say that, the second half performance was chalk and cheese.

“It was so much better, we could have won the game, probably should have won the game with the chances that we had.

“We won the first ball, second contacts, we put balls in the box and I thought we pinned them back.

“In the second half we were actually able to keep the ball from a throw-in which is one of the things which is a big bugbear of mine at the moment because it’s not like we have just got young players in there, we have got some experienced players who can receive a ball from a throw-in and it needs to improve.”

Knowles’ goal in the second half was enough to secure the Saddlers a point and Flynn was really pleased for the forward to get off the mark.

“He does take it well,” Flynn continued. “It’s a great finish and it’s probably the hardest chance he has had here and he has gone and scored the goal. I am really pleased for him to get off the mark.”
