Flynn: Saddlers upbeat ahead of Tranmere test

23 September 2022

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn insists the team aren’t feeling sorry for themselves and is focused on giving supporters something to cheer about when his side face Tranmere Rovers at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

The Saddlers have been on a frustrating run despite showing signs of encouragement with their performances.

Although results haven’t gone their way, Flynn insists the mood in the camp is still positive.

“I won’t sulk, I won’t feel sorry for myself and I don’t expect my players to do anything like that,” Flynn said.

“They’re upbeat, they know we’re not a million miles away, we’ve just got to concentrate for the full game, not just 80/90 per cent of it.

“We know it’s a frustrating time, the supporters have been behind us, I think it was only the one set of boos against Colchester at half time and we appreciate that.

“We’re at home tomorrow and we’ve got to give supporters something to feel positive about because they deserve that.”

Recent matches have been closely contested and Flynn has called on his team to be clinical and improve in possession.

He is anticipating a difficult test against Tranmere who he expects to be well drilled when they visit the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

“Micky’s teams are always well organised,” Flynn commented.

“I watched their game against Salford and I thought they were excellent. It’s always the case playing somebody who’s starting to hit form and we’ve got to be at it.

“They will want to be there or there abouts come the end of the season. They’ve had a bit of a shuffle in terms of recruitment, they’re going to be younger, with more legs so it’s going to be a tough game.

“We played Leyton Orient at the weekend, the league leaders and if we didn’t waste as many final balls, we would have been in a lot more goalscoring positions so we’ve got to take care of the football. If we’ve got the ball, they can’t score and we’ve got to make sure we use it wisely and take our chances.”
