Michael Flynn looks ahead to Rochdale clash

28 October 2022

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn believes his side will be full of confidence going into Saturday's clash with Rochdale at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

The Saddlers have claimed four points from their previous two outings, drawing 1-1 at Sutton United last weekend before beating Harrogate Town 3-1 at home on Tuesday.

Flynn stated that belief within the squad was always evident despite a tricky start to the campaign.

“The confidence has always been there,” Flynn explained.

“There were one or two games where you could see we were getting drained a little bit, we’re not robots.

“The players have got feelings and they care about the football club, so obviously it is a natural reaction, but they’ve been fantastic.

“It’s a great group, they work hard day in, day out. For me, it’s a pleasure to be their coach.”

The Saddlers will enter this weekend’s game sitting 13th in League Two, while Rochdale are two points above the relegation zone in 22nd.

Flynn is expecting a difficult challenge against Jim Bentley’s men, who drew 1-1 at Tranmere Rovers in midweek.

“They’re not a bad group, they’ve got some very good players,” Flynn said.

“Jim’s experienced at this level and it’s going to be a tough game.

“There’s no gimmes in this league and anybody who thinks that, that’s when you come unstuck.”

Walsall have been solid at the Poundland Bescot Stadium under Flynn’s stewardship, losing only twice there in the league this season while winning the previous three.

Flynn believes a strong home record is vital for success but wants his side to improve in away matches.

“The proof is in the pudding, we have changed the home form around dramatically, and any team who wants to be successful has got to have good home form,” Flynn stated.

“We still need to improve on the road. It’s not rocket science, we need to get some more wins away.

“But let’s just concentrate on tomorrow and take each game at a time.”
