Match Report: Walsall 1-0 Rochdale

29 October 2022

Hayden White’s first goal for Walsall proved to be enough for the Saddlers to beat Rochdale and make it back-to-back wins in Sky Bet League Two.

The defender scored the only goal of the game in the first half as the hosts rounded off a positive week that has seen them pick up seven points from their last three outings.

Michael Flynn named an unchanged team following Tuesday’s victory over Harrogate Town.

Brandon Comley returned to the bench after serving a one-match ban in midweek.

Neither side were able to create any clear cut chances in what was a cagey first half an hour in which defences were on top.

Walsall’s best attempt came on 29 minutes when Bennett won the ball in the middle of the park, burst forward and let fly with a shot but Richard O’Donnell made a comfortable save.

The Saddlers went one better with their next chance though and opened the scoring on 35 minutes.

Tom Knowles’ long throw was flicked on by Manny Monthé and the ball dropped to Danny Johnson whose overhead kick was blocked but White was there to power home the rebound.

Walsall saw out the remainder of the first half and went into the break with the lead.

The Saddlers started the second half well and almost doubled their advantage on 50 minutes when Liam Gordon set up Knowles who swept the ball goalwards and his effort whistled just past the post.

Rochdale had a spell of pressure shortly after Walsall’s goal but the closest they came in that period saw former Saddler Devante Rodney’s header caught by Owen Evans.

Flynn’s men had chances through Isaac Hutchinson and Knowles as they looked to get a second.

Rochdale started to enjoy more of the possession and had a good chance on 73 minutes when Abraham Odoh’s cross found Liam Kelly and he rifled in a low shot but just missed the target.

The visitors continued to apply pressure in the final ten minutes but the Saddlers stood firm and held on to claim all three points and make it four consecutive home league wins.
