Walsall bowed out of the Papa John’s Trophy after a defeat against League One outfit MK Dons.
Henry Lawrence and substitute Nathan Holland scored second half goals for the visitors to earn them three points to progress from the group.
Michael Flynn made four changes to the team that started at Mansfield Town on Saturday.
Liam Gordon, Andy Williams, Jacob Maddox and Danny Cashman came in for Taylor Allen, Peter Clarke, Liam Kinsella and Tom Knowles.
Both sides had a chance each in the opening 10 minutes. Darragh Burns fired over for the Dons before Isaac Hutchinson arrowed in a shot that was comfortably saved by Franco Ravizzoli.
Lawrence, Dawson Devoy and Burns all had shots at goal but they didn’t cause Evans too many problems.
The Saddlers had a couple of chances as Williams headed over before Gordon hooked the ball goalwards.
Fresh from his first professional goal, Liam Bennett looked for his second in as many matches as he let fly from 25-yards but his effort swerved just over the bar.
Despite an open first half, it ended goalless.
After a quiet start to the second half, the deadlock was broken on 62 minutes when Lawrence cut in from the left and his low drive found the bottom corner.
Flynn made a quadruple change in an attempt to get back into the game.
Gordon, Williams, Douglas James-Taylor and Cashman all came off and were replaced by Taylor Allen, Danny Johnson, Timmy Abraham and Ronan Maher.
Allen almost made an immediate impact as he whipped in a shot from the right but it curled just wide of the far post.
Walsall saw plenty of the ball but couldn’t find a way through a stubborn Dons defence.
The visitors made certain of the victory as Holland netted from a free-kick in stoppage time.
