Match Report: Stockport County 1-1 Walsall

1 October 2022

The Saddlers secured themselves a point on the road as a late leveller from Andy Williams cancelled out Paddy Madden’s first half header.

In a game of very few chances for either side, it was the tale of two headers at Edgeley Park either side of the break.

It took Stockport until the 26th minute to get themselves ahead and it came as a deep cross was sent to the back post where Madden had peeled off his marker and his header cannoned off the underside of the bar and bounced just over the line.

Shortly after the half hour mark, the Saddlers had their only real clearcut chance of the game when Danny Johnson pinched the ball high up the pitch and went up against Fraser Horsfall but after working himself a yard of space, Johnson saw his low-driven shot well blocked the recovering defender.

As the half drew to a close, the home side went close to adding a second as Horsfall was found free at the back post from a corner but his header was just wide of the mark.

Into the second half and similarly to the first half, there weren’t many clear cut chances for either side.

Tom Knowles tried his luck from distance just after the restart but his dipping effort was easy for Vit Jaros to claim in the County goal.

The home side had the chance to extend their lead with just shy of 20 minutes left to play when Connor Evans squared the ball to Will Collar but the advancing defender could only fire his effort over the bar.

Michael Flynn’s side got their just rewards with two minutes left of normal time when Danny Cashman delivered a low corner into the box and Williams stooped in to glance the ball into the far corner to secure the point.
