Flynn disappointed with Saddlers performance

3 October 2022

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn was disappointed with his team’s performance against Stockport County on Saturday but praised their resilience to come from behind to get a point.

Andy Williams netted his first goal for the Saddlers with a glancing header in the 88th minute after Paddy Madden gave the Hatters the lead in the first half.

Flynn was pleased to have taken a point from the game but was unhappy with his side’s display overall.

“I thought we were absolutely dreadful,” Flynn said.

“We didn’t pass, we lost near enough every battle but the one thing we did do is we kept going.

“We kept going, we stuck together, we could have felt sorry for ourselves and crumbled. In all fairness, we’ve played much better than we did (on Saturday) and not got any points.

“It’s a point on the road, I’m pleased Andy Williams got his first goal and that gives us something to build on but the performance was nowhere near as good enough.

“We worked all week on defending crosses, we knew how they were going to play and he’s had a free header, it’s killing us.

“Away from home, you don’t want to be giving teams helping hands and that’s what we did but we’ve come away with a point, not sure how, but I’ll take it.”

The Saddlers were backed by 1252 supporters in the away end at Edgeley Park.

Flynn was grateful for the phenomenal support and was apologetic about the performance the team produced.

“Fans, unbelievable turnout of over 1200," Flynn commented.

"They’re disappointed watching that, I sympathise with them and apologise on behalf of us but we have got a point and we kept going

“We’ve got two home games now; we need to try and get some wins.

“We’ve got to do better, we know that. They’ve stuck together, they gave them almost something to smile about on the way home but we’ve got to play better than what we did.”
