Memorable Match: Walsall 5-0 Crawley - April 2015

17 November 2022

Walsall and Crawley Town will meet for the 14th time on Saturday as Michael Flynn’s side look to extend their unbeaten run to six matches.

The Saddlers and Crawley have both won four times against each other, drawing the other five clashes.

We take a look back at a memorable encounter as the Saddlers put on a five-star show against the Red Devils in April 2015.

Walsall 5-0 Crawley - 14 April 2015 - League One

Walsall and Crawley were both looking for a victory to steer themselves away from the relegation zone in League One.

Dean Smith’s men got off to a great start and opened the scoring after just 16 minutes when Kieron Morris threaded the ball through to Jordy Hiwula and the striker, who was on loan from Manchester City, poked the ball past former West Bromwich Albion and Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen.

Hiwula doubled Walsall’s advantage on 65 minutes when the ball dropped to him on the edge of the box and he turned well before curling a beauty into the back of the net.

The floodgates opened from there and Kieron Morris added a third two minutes later with a powerful strike from distance after a great solo run.

Defender Andy Taylor got in on the act on 81 minutes when his effort from outside the box took a wicked deflection before dropping into the net.

Jordan Cook rounded off a fantastic evening of football when he rolled the ball into the far corner in the 90th minute.

The win took the Saddlers up to 54 points with four games to go. Smith’s side finished the 2014/15 campaign comfortably in 14th, nine points clear of the relegation zone and 10 behind the play-off places but that season will be remembered for the team’s run to the 2015 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Cup final and first ever Wembley appearance.
