Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn was proud of his team following Saturday's 2-0 Emirates FA Cup first-round victory against League One Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.
Saddlers goalkeeper Owen Evans saved Brandon Hanlan's second-half penalty with the score at 1-0, while goals from Jacob Maddox and Isaac Hutchinson secured the win for Flynn's men.
Flynn praised his players and the 520 travelling Walsall supporters.
“I thought we were excellent [on Saturday], the only disappointment is that we didn’t score more goals,” he said.
“We got in some threatening positions, just that final execution [was lacking].
“I’m proud of the players and those fans were class, they were first class. They sang their hearts out from the first minute until after the game. They were a pleasure to play in front of.”
The Saddlers boss was also pleased with his defence after a consecutive clean sheet and highlighted that everyone played their part in an impressive win.
“I thought they [the defence] were brilliant,” he stated.
“And the box we played in midfield, Isaac [Hutchinson], Jacob Maddox, [Liam] Kinsella and [Brandon] Comley were outstanding. They stuck to what I asked them to, they followed their runners, they were confident on the ball, and they picked up second balls. But it was a real team performance.
“That’s what I’m more interested in. I’m not interested in individual performances or who scores, I’m more concerned about the team effort and the togetherness, and we’re showing that we’ve got that in abundance at the minute.”
Walsall’s first goal of the match came from a set-piece as Maddox finished first-time from Liam Gordon’s corner.
Flynn said set plays are an area of the game where the Saddlers aim to excel.
“We work hard on them,” he explained.
“I make no apologies for scoring off set plays, it’s a massive part of the game. World Cup finals have been won and lost from set plays. Champions League finals have been won and lost from set plays.
“So, that’s a massive, massive part of the game. And it’s getting bigger.”
The Saddlers will be ball number 33 in tonight’s second-round draw, which will take place at 7pm on BBC2.
Flynn is not hoping to face any team in particular.
“Let’s just hopefully get a home draw and we’ll go from there,” he commented.
