Michael Flynn praises Saddlers character

16 March 2022

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn praised the character of his players after what he felt was a deserved victory over Oldham Athletic.

Goals from Emmanuel Osadebe and Conor Wilkinson saw the Saddlers come from behind against the Latics to record a fourth consecutive home victory.

Flynn was pleased with the way his team stuck to the task and how they responded to the early set back.

“First of all we showed unbelievable character,” Flynn said.

“Disappointed with the goal we conceded from a set play, it was kind of harsh because Joss was close to his man and he’s collided with Manny.

“Conor is just about to clear it and he’s just got a tiny nick so it was a bit harsh but coming from behind to win a game for the first time this season is exactly the character I want from these lads.

“We did deserve the win I thought, second half especially.

“As soon as we scored the goal you could see the boys settled down.

“Oldham are a dangerous team, they’re very good going forward. They’ve got some very clever players and they can punish you, they can score goals.

“They caused us some problems in the early part of the first half but we kept our shape, we kept doing what we wanted to do and we played some really good football.”

It’s four home wins in a row for Walsall and Flynn has won all three of his first matches in charge at the Banks’s Stadium.

The Head Coach has praised Saddlers fans for their backing but was keen to stress having strong home form is imperative.

“Any home ground should be a tough place to go,” he commented.

“The fans have been brilliant since I’ve been here and I know how loud they can be.

“They were brilliant (last night) because the lads needed it.

“There were three subs I had to make. Hayden White was struggling, Manny again with his knee – he’s caught it again but it’s testament that they kept going and we saw the game out.”
