Daniels pleased to open Walsall account

8 March 2022

Walsall defender Donervon Daniels was delighted to score his first goal for the Saddlers against Barrow on Saturday.

The 28-year-old headed in Emmanuel Osadebe’s free-kick to draw the Saddlers level at the Dunes Hotel Stadium.

Daniels is keen to continue chipping in with goals and he was pleased to have found the back of the net at the second time of asking in the game.

“It was actually quite funny really as I had a chance before that great ball that Paddy (Emmanuel Osadebe) put in,” he explained.

“Conor put one in from a corner, I saw it and I got excited and I scuffed it basically.

“When Paddy put that great ball in, I was calm and I attacked it with all I had so I was really happy when the ball hit the back of the net because we needed it at that point.

“As I said when I first came in, I want to keep adding goals and quality performances to help the team.”

The Saddlers have lost just one of their last six matches and are three unbeaten.

Michael Flynn’s side take on high-flying Sutton United at the Banks’s Stadium on Saturday.

Daniels has enjoyed working with Flynn and is keen to impress and continue building on recent results.

“At this point in the season, it’s about showcasing what we can do for the new gaffer,” he said.

“I have loved every moment he has been in. He has been a credit really.

“He has challenged us and he has put demands on us and we have to go out there each and every week and day, even in training, showing what we can do and show the fans that we can pick up as many points as possible.

“Ideally, we would have liked three points but right now we are on a run, we are picking up positive performances at home and away and we just have to keep doing that.

“The game against Sutton is going to be a tough one as they are flying high towards the top end of the table.

“This week is going to be vitally important for us to get some rest and for us to get some work in on the training pitch and hopefully Hayden is back at that point so we can work on the system that the gaffer likes us to play.”
