Michael Flynn pleased with runout against Aston Villa

10 July 2022

Saddlers Head Coach Michael Flynn believes the game against Premier League side Aston Villa was a worthwhile run out for his side.

Despite losing 4-0 against Steven Gerrard’s side with Leon Bailey, Cameron Archer, Ollie Watkins and Douglas Luiz scoring the goals, Flynn was pleased with what his side got out of the game at the sun-soaked Poundland Bescot Stadium.

“It was a worthwhile run out for us,” he said. Of course it was a tough ask for us to try and win the game.

“They have got a fantastic group of players and there are some that aren’t even here because they are already on their pre-season training camp. It was a good run out and there were some really good performances.

“In terms of how we set up the preseason plan, the three teams we have played so far we expected to have less possession so that we could look at more things out of possession.

"It didn’t quite work out that way because we actually had more possession against Barnsley and Birmingham so today was the first real chance for us to see us with a low percentage of possession.

“It was a well worthwhile task in regards to being out of possession and then hopefully next week with the two games we have against Leamington and Telford, we can dominate possession and we can have a look at the attacking movements and get these points across in training.”
