Matt Taylor previews Mansfield trip

14 January 2022

Walsall Head Coach Matt Taylor is expecting to come up against a combative Mansfield Town side tomorrow afternoon.

The Saddlers will be looking to bounce back from last weekend’s disappointing defeat to Stevenage when they take on Nigel Clough’s side at the One Call Stadium.

Taylor is confident his team will respond and compete for a result but is anticipating a stern test from the Stags.

“It’s a different challenge because I feel they’re a team that are physically strong," he said.

"They’re combative, each and every player, and it often happens when results start turning, seems to be giving that little bit more effort but they’re a very good team.

“When we played them at home this season, they will most definitely be a different prospect for us, a different challenge and everybody in their squad will be full of confidence but I’d argue we should use that to our advantage.

“We’re away from home, I feel it’s a game that we most definitely can compete in and get a result from but I’m sure Nigel and his staff will be thinking that as well.

“It’s a game that I’m very much looking forward to and what we need to do is select a team that is capable of going there and winning.

“One thing I do know having watched them is that they’re extremely physical and each and every one of their players gives 100 per cent and that’s got to be the minimum requirement for us going into the next game.

“We’ve had a very good training week in terms of the work we’ve done on the grass.

“I felt it was imperative for the group after the result at the weekend which was really disappointing and unacceptable from my point of view so the players have worked extremely hard this week towards the next game.

“There’s positive signs but it’s now massively important that the next time the team steps onto the pitch, they perform."
