Flynn: "It was a win I felt we thoroughly deserved"

21 February 2022

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn felt his team thoroughly deserved their victory over Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.

George Miller’s first half strike, his ninth of the campaign, was enough to see the Saddlers claim all three points against the league leaders.

Flynn praised his players and staff for their contributions on what was a satisfying afternoon in Gloucestershire.

“I thought we were excellent,” he said.

“I thought we were really disciplined. The players have taken on board what I’ve asked them.

"A lot of credit has got to go to my staff as well, they’ve had a big input this weekend as well.

“I did decide to change the shape just because I know how dangerous Forest Green are but overall, it was a win I felt we thoroughly deserved.

“Anybody who wins here is going to have to earn it. Rob Edwards has done a fantastic job; I think they will be champions and we’re only the third team to beat them in the league.

“Those players have set the levels that I expect and I won’t expect less than that. There were some outstanding performances, not just on the ball but off the ball as well.

“I thought Tyrese was excellent. We know he’s an attacking player but Kane Wilson’s an athlete and most of their goals come from his side where he creates them so we were aware of that and we thought Tyrese could take him the other way and I thought he did that very well.”

The Saddlers were backed by 610 supporters at the Fully Charged New Lawn and Flynn was delighted with the support.

“The support was brilliant,” he said.

“They’ve got right behind the team and it was good because my little boy was there so it was his first game watching Walsall.

"All the Walsall fans were looking after him and making sure he was alright.”

Walsall are back on the road again on Tuesday evening with a trip to Swindon Town.
