Interview: A catch up with Manager Stephen Guest

15 December 2022

Walsall Women Manager Stephen Guest has been pleased with what he has seen so far from the players and is optimistic about the remainder of the season.

Guest took charge of the team in mid-November but his start has been disrupted with postponements and abandonments.

In his two games in charge so far, he’s overseen a 2-2 draw with Darlaston and a dramatic 1-0 cup victory over City of Stoke.

Walsall are currently second in the West Midlands Regional Women's Football League Division One North.

Guest is keen to reach the summit and he’s been impressed with what he has seen from the team so far in the two games he’s took charge of and in training.

“The girls are great,” Guest said.

“Training is good and the way we take it into games is good.

“When we know we can’t get forward enough, the girls defend well and put their bodies on the line to stay in games.

“They’re taking to the style of play and the formation we’re playing so it’s our own mini pre-season, the girls know this.

“We’re trying to get the girls fitter and stronger. When they’re on the ball and they pass and they move, they’re a joy to watch.

“We want to be up there as one. When we took over, we were top of the league.

“There’s Shifnal, they’re no mugs and they’ll be up there. We play them last game of the season so that could be a big game.

“Hopefully we’ll be up there come the end of the season.”

Guest has high ambitions for the team and is excited for the challenge ahead, both this season and beyond.

“There’s plenty to be optimistic about,” he commented.

“We’ve got some great players in squad, some great players coming through.

“If we can add quality from the league above, hopefully we can get promotion and then one day be a national league team.

“Myself and my backroom staff have been there, we know what it takes to be a national league side so hopefully we can bring that here.”
