Flynn: "We were beaten by the better team"

30 December 2022

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn admitted his team lost to the better team on Thursday night.

Two goals from Kyle Wootton saw Stockport County end the Saddlers’ nine-match unbeaten run.

Flynn conceded that his side had an off day and that Dave Challinor’s team proved too strong on the night.

“We got beaten by the better team,” Flynn admitted.

“I’m not going to try and paper over the cracks – we were second best all over the pitch. It’s always tough when seven or eight have an off day, it’s one of those where we were beaten by the better team, you’ve got to hold your hands up, dust yourselves down and now we’ve got to try and go on another unbeaten run.

“It is disappointing, any loss at home is disappointing. They’ve been excellent in the last few months and I’m not going to over react at the minute.

“The simple fact of the matter is we were second best all over the pitch. Stockport deserved the three points, they looked stronger than us, they out run us, they won first balls, second balls and even when we had a chance or two, we didn’t do anything with it.

“The one at the end Conor misses, the one Jacob Maddox hits, it hits Andy Williams and they break on us. If we’d have got anything from that, we wouldn’t have deserved it.

“The efforts they’ve given over the last few months, all season actually, we’ve had an off day and you can’t have an off day against a team like Stockport because they will go for the jugular.”
