Saddlers captain Donervon Daniels sat down with us for an exclusive interview in Saddlers Shout.

Here is a snippet of our chat with the 29-year-old.

Donervon, thanks for joining us. Firstly, the busy Christmas period is on the horizon. Is it a time of year the team are excited about?

“Of course, the Christmas period is always a good time. There are a lot of games and especially when you’re in good momentum, good form, you want the games to come as quick as they do come around the Christmas period and I think all the boys are looking forward to continuing this form and taking it to the next level now.”

Was it frustrating that last week’s match against Salford City was unfortunately postponed?

“We were all frustrated, we trained throughout the week but we knew the weather was going to be a bit iffy, cold, snowy, hard ground so we knew in the back of our minds that the game might be called off but we still wanted to play the game. It’s not going to hinder our momentum, obviously we want a game every Saturday and when we have Saturday and Tuesday games, it allows you to pick up points and keep that momentum high. It was frustrating but we’ve got to take our positive frustrations into today’s game coming up.”

You mention the momentum the team have behind them after a good couple of months. How do you reflect on the way the team turned the tide after a difficult September?

“I feel like it’s been a working process. This is a new team that the gaffer and his coaching staff assembled in pre-season, a lot of new players, everybody still learning and understanding each other, how they play and what to expect from them in a pressure situation in a game. Working through the games so far, we’re kicking on now and we’re coming together really well. We understand each other, we know where to be on the pitch to help each other so I think we’re starting to find a high gear now. It’s momentum, it’s consistency and we’ve got to keep that level of expectation on each other so we don’t slip.”

You’ve been playing alongside Hayden White and Manny Monthé in the back three. You played with each other last season but do you feel you’ve grown as a trio?

“The relationship was there last year; the relationship has improved and continues to blossom now throughout this current season. I have a really good relationship with Hayden as an individual and Manny as an individual. I feel like we understand each other’s weaknesses, so we’re there to cover each other. We understand each other’s quality, so we amplify it. It’s not just us as a back three that gets clean sheets, it’s Owen (Evans) – we have a great relationship with Owen, then there’s Benno (Liam Bennett) when he plays right wing-back, or Knowlesy (Tom Knowles) has played there a few times, there’s Gordon and there’s Taylor (Allen). As a defensive unit, we have to include Kins (Liam Kinsella), Coms (Brandon Comley), the midfield is very important. We all have to be on the same wavelength to get our objective goal which is to have clean sheets and win games.”
