Williams loving life with the Saddlers

25 August 2022

Walsall striker Andy Williams is loving life at the Poundland Bescot Stadium and is desperate to open his account.

The 36-year-old joined from Cheltenham Town in the summer and thought he’d scored his first Saddlers goal against Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night but it was ruled out after the referee deemed him to have handled the ball.

Williams is determined to start chipping in with goals but he’s feeling positive and is really enjoying playing for Walsall.

“I’m genuinely loving it,” Williams said.

“The gaffer and Hats (Wayne Hatswell) are a great team and I’m enjoying working every day with them. There’s just that little frustration not to score goals and feel like I’m warranting my place in the team.

“I’m working really hard, getting the odd assist for DJ (Danny Johnson) but it would be nice to chip in myself.

“I thought I’d done that on Tuesday but just had it chalked off.

“It’s a great club and the gaffer’s pushing us in the right direction and I’m really positive for the season and looking forward to the challenges ahead.”

The next test for the Saddlers comes from newly promoted Grimsby Town who visit the Poundland Bescot Stadium on Saturday (3pm) as attention turns back to Sky Bet League Two.

Williams is keen to take encouragement from Tuesday’s performance and get back on a winning trail after a run of four without a win in all competitions.

“In the first game we started on fire and since then we’ve got the odd result or grinded out results when we haven’t been as good as we should have been,” he commented.

“We had our first loss away at Barrow, that was a frustrating night. In general, there’s a lot of positives and that’s why I think Tuesday was a good one because you don’t want to lose a game but if you do lose, you lose in the right way and that’s how we did it on Tuesday and I think that’s a positive we’ve got to take into the weekend.

“We’ll prepare right, the gaffer and Hats do a lot of work on the training ground with us so hopefully we’ll put things right and give the crowd something to cheer about at the weekend.”
