Michael Flynn discusses Grimsby defeat and Papa John's Trophy opener

27 August 2022

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn was left frustrated after seeing Grimsby Town come from behind to take three points away from the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

The Saddlers opened the scoring after three minutes through Danny Johnson but two second half goals from Harry Clifton saw the Mariners turn the game on its head.

Flynn felt his side should have gone on to win the game and was frustrated that they didn’t put the game to bed earlier in the match.

“Any game you lose is frustrating but when it’s should be out of sight, it makes it even worse,” Flynn said.

“That’s the second time we’ve been punished for not killing teams off, one being Stevenage and on Saturday. You can’t keep giving teams chances and letting them off the hook.

“We looked, probably for the first time, a little bit shaky at the back with the decision making and recovery runs. Take Liam Bennett out of that, I thought Liam was very good.

"When Donervon left, that was a blow but people need to step up and they didn’t.”

“I’m not going to sugar coat it, that’s a game we should have had three points and we’ve ended up with none so I’m bitterly disappointed."

Attention quickly turns to Tuesday’s Papa John’s Trophy tie against West Ham United Under 21s at the Poundland Bescot Stadium (7pm kick-off).

Flynn admitted he may have to rotate the team but is keen to get back on track quickly.

“We’ve got to carry on,” he commented.

“We’ve got a tough game on Tuesday against West Ham’s youngsters who will be up for it.

“I’ll have to have a think, there’s players that maybe need a rest. Brandon Comley isn’t right; he’s playing with a niggle. We are bare bones but let’s see what the week brings.

“I want to strengthen; I need to strengthen because I think the group need a lift. I think the supporters as well because they’ve been kicked in the guts (on Saturday) and they don’t deserve that.”
