Match Report: Walsall 0-1 Charlton Athletic

23 August 2022

The Saddlers bowed out of the Carabao Cup as a goal early in the second half was enough to see the visitors claim victory at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

Diallang Jaiyesimi scored the only goal of the game after the Saddlers dominated the first half and even had a goal of their own ruled out for handball but it was the Addicks who progressed to round three.

Michael Flynn made five changes to the team that started Saturday’s goalless draw at Gillingham.

Taylor Allen returned after missing the trip to Kent through injury while Isaac Hutchinson, Jack Earing, Liam Bennett and Timmy Abraham were handed starts.

Hayden White, Liam Kinsella, Brandon Comley, Peter Clarke and Danny Johnson all dropped to the bench.

After a quiet opening 10 minutes, the Saddlers got into their rhythm and created a handful of opportunities in the first half.

The first fell to Andy Williams on 15 minutes when Ronan Maher threaded the ball into his path and the striker arrowed in a shot but Joe Wollacott was equal to it.

Wollacott was tested again six minutes later when Hutchinson rifled in a shot from just outside the area but the Addicks shot stopper got his gloves behind it before gathering the ball just as Williams was following up.

Taylor Allen and Manny Monthé also had decent attempts as the Saddlers took the game to their League One opponents in an enterprising half.

Charlton’s only meaningful chance in the opening 45 minutes came through Diallang Jaiyesimi who headed wide from close range.

The Saddlers thought they opened the scoring on the stroke of half time when Williams touched the ball in with what looked like his chest but the referee deemed it to come off his hand and ruled it out and the teams went in level at the break.

Walsall continued to look bright going into the second half but Charlton started to grow into the game in the second half.

They opened the scoring with their first shot on target when Miles Leaburn played Jaiyesimi through on goal and he fired his effort past Owen Evans to give the visitors the lead against the run of play on 57 minutes.

Flynn reacted and made a double change eight minutes later as he introduced Danny Johnson and Liam Kinsella in place of Maher and Williams.

Flynn Clarke and Hayden White were also brought on with 15 minutes to go in place of Hutchinson and Abraham as the Saddlers Head Coach freshened it up.

The Saddlers continued to show endeavour and had another opportunity when Monthe swept a shot wide.

Charlton managed the game well as they restricted the Saddlers to fewer opportunities in a bid to retain their advantage.

Walsall continued to push but couldn’t find a leveller to force a shootout and their Carabao Cup campaign came to an end.
