Match Report: Gillingham 0-0 Walsall

20 August 2022

The Saddlers claimed their third clean sheet of the League Two campaign as they drew 0-0 against a robust Gillingham outfit.

It was a game with very few clear cut chances for either side but on the balance of play, the home side will feel like they could and probably should have tested Owen Evans more than they did throughout the game.

The first half chance of the game fell the way of Michael Flynn’s side as the ball bounced kindly for Tom Knowles 25-yards out on the left and he tried his luck from there but the effort didn’t challenge Glenn Morris in the Gillingham net.

Just after the half hour mark, Knowles tried his luck again from a similar sort of distance and although his shot was slightly closer this time round, it still sailed wide of the far post.

Moments before half time, the best chance of the half came for the Saddlers as Manny Monthe controlled the ball well on the edge of the area and set it back for Donervon Daniels but the defender was just off balance as he hit it and it wizzed just over the bar.

Ten minutes after the restart, the home side had their best opening of the game as Max Ehmer composed himself in the area before poking it towards the far post but Evans made a brilliant one-handed save to deny the centre half.

Shortly after the hour mark, the Saddlers went close themselves as substitute Liam Bennett delivered a deep cross and Hayden White kept it alive at the back post but his effort cushioned off the post and back into the arms of Morris.

The home side continued to grow into the match in the final stages and nearly went ahead when Stuart O’Keefe pinched the ball high up the pitch off Brandon Comley but as he drove into the box, he lost his composure and blazed the shot over the bar.

As the clock ticked towards 90, both sides went close to finding a winning goal. Firstly, Comley whipped a dangerous corner into the box and Monthe met it with some force at the back post but his header went inches wide of the post.

In the 88th minute, Gills substitute Lewis Walker got goal side of Daniels and looked like he had snatched it for the home side but his tame shot bobbled off the post and was eventually cleared by the Saddlers.

The moment of the final exchanges came the way of Flynn’s team right as the clock struck 90. The ball bounced into the path of Danny Johnson and he looked set to win it for the Saddlers but Morris made a brilliant save to deny the forward.
