Johnson calls on Saddlers to show battling qualities

18 August 2022

Walsall striker Danny Johnson says the team must show their battling qualities as they prepare for their second away trip of the week to Gillingham.

The Saddlers suffered their first defeat of the season at Barrow on Tuesday evening and will be looking to bounce back at Priestfield on Saturday afternoon.

After falling 2-0 down in midweek, Johnson gave Walsall hope with his sixth goal of the campaign.

Despite defeat, the 29-year-old felt the players showed fighting spirit in the second half and feels that quality is vital going in to another difficult away game this weekend.

“That’s what you’ve got to do,” he said.

“It’s not going to be easy. I think after the start (on Tuesday), that was the only option we had to fight and try and get back into the game.

“That first half, we let ourselves down. We came out second half and we had to battle and I think we did that.

“We gave ourselves the best chance we could by getting that early goal and felt from then on, we battled well but that chance just didn’t come for anyone to get that second goal.

“We gave ourselves too much to do after that first half.

“The good thing is, the game is only a few days away.

“We don’t have a week between games to dwell on it and over think it.

"Hopefully we can get a positive result at the weekend and kick on again.”
