Flynn previews Stevenage clash

12 August 2022

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn is expecting an experienced and confident Stevenage side to arrive at the Poundland Bescot Stadium as attention turns back to Sky Bet League Two tomorrow afternoon.

Both sides have won all three league and cup matches so far this season and will both be looking to continue building momentum.

Flynn insists his players will need to be at their best and win their individual duels in what he expects to be a difficult match.

“It’s going to be a tough game,” Flynn said.

“They’re very much direct, they’ve backed Steve (Evans) over the summer and he knows this league inside out.

“It’s going to be a tough challenge, we’ve got to win our individual battles, defend as we have been and take our chances the other end.

“They’ve got a group of men. If you look at their team, they’re very experienced with the players they’ve got there so I’m not expecting anything other than a tough game tomorrow.

“We’re getting into the swing of things now, players are getting fully match fit and when you start well, the confidence is high and it’s going to be an interesting game.

“It’s going to be a typical tough League Two game tomorrow.”

The games are coming thick and fast for the Saddlers who will travel to Barrow and Gillingham after Saturday’s clash with Stevenage.

Walsall also have a Carabao Cup second round tie at home to League One side Charlton Athletic on Tuesday 23rd August (7pm kick-off) to look forward to and Flynn admitted he was relieved to have been drawn at home.

“I’m just glad it’s at home because we’ve got a long enough week already with the travelling to Barrow and Gillingham so thankfully, we were pulled out first,” he commented.

“It’s going to be a tough game, they’ve got a good squad, they’re looking to get in to the Championship and Ben (Garner) is there as well after a good season with Swindon so I’m looking forward to it.”
