Flynn keen to see Saddlers rediscover their confidence in attack

22 August 2022

Walsall Head Coach Michael Flynn feels his side need to rediscover their confidence in the attacking third following Saturday’s goalless draw at Gillingham.

The Saddlers kept their fourth clean sheet in six matches at Priestfield in a game that saw little goal mouth action.

Flynn was pleased with how the team applied themselves but has called on the players to show more belief in front of goal and create more opportunities.

“I don’t think we tested their goalkeeper enough but I’ve been saying it for a little bit now, we look a little low on confidence in the final third and I can’t quite put my finger on why because it’s been a solid start,” Flynn said.

“I’ll have to get in amongst them, speak to them and gee them up because we can play a lot better than we did.

“We’re not playing as well as we can at the minute but the attitude of the players was excellent and we had the best chance of the game, you fancy Danny nine times out of 10 there.

“The game was quite scrappy and probably had 0-0 written all over it to be honest.”

It’s been a gruelling week for Walsall who had two long trips to Barrow and Gillingham in the space of four days.

Flynn also has a number of injuries to contend with, including Taylor Allen who was ruled out of the trip to Kent and the Saddlers Head Coach provided an update on his condition.

“Taylor was unfit,” he confirmed.

“He had a stiff neck so he was another one that was ruled out so there was six ruled out.

“It doesn’t seem to be easing like we need because we need some help, we need some reinforcements so either we get some players in next week, which I’m hoping to, or we get a couple of the injured back.”
