Walsall captain Donervon Daniels believes there is more to come from the team and is keen to show the levels displayed against Hartlepool United on a consistent basis.
The Saddlers will be looking to start as well on the road as they did at home when they visit Head Coach Michael Flynn’s former side Newport County tomorrow afternoon.
Daniels is keen to kick on from last Saturday’s triumph and feels the confidence that last weekend's result has given the squad.
“The first game of the season is very important because you want to go out there and get the win, but you want to get the win in style and feel the confidence within the team,” he said.
“But it’s only the first game and there’s a lot more football to be played and within this dressing room and within the culture that the gaffer has created and continuing to create, we know there’s so much more to come from us as a group and we know that we have to apply ourselves well both mentally and physically to the challenges ahead.
“Consistency is what gets you where you need to be by the end of the season.”
Daniels, who moved to the Poundland Bescot Stadium last January, was given the captain’s armband for the 2022/23 season.
He is pleased with the faith shown in him from the Head Coach and is excited about the prospect of leading the Saddlers through the campaign.
“Being club captain is something that I’ve really wanted to be,” he commented.
“It’s something that I’m really excited about and I’m excited for the season. I feel like since everyone has come in for pre-season, we’ve all knuckled down and understood the work involved to go on and achieve something this season.
“There’s a lot of responsibility being the club’s captain but it’s something that I feel I’m ready for at this stage in my career.
“I feel like it’s something that my character bolds well with and obviously the gaffer has shown a lot of trust and faith in me in selecting me for the role as well as my new deal at the end of last season and being a big part in what we are trying to achieve as a team and as a club. I will carry all this responsibility with pride.”
