Walsall Head Coach Matt Taylor feels his team are showing positive signs and believes they are close to delivering a complete performance.
The Saddlers earned a 2-2 draw at Exeter City on Saturday to halt a run of successive defeats.
George Miller’s brace saw the visitors twice come back from behind and while Taylor was pleased with the character his side showed, he admitted the team must be more ruthless in the final third after creating so many good opportunities.
“I’m disappointed not coming away with three points because some of our play in the first half and the chances we created, we’ve got to be far more ruthless in those areas,” he said.
“We’re close to putting what I would consider a complete performance together, you see snippets of it and you see that we scored some really good goals.
“How we didn’t get two penalties in the first half is beyond me. The first one on Joss looks more clean-cut than the second one but it was end to end.
“From my perspective, I’m pleased we’ve come away to a tough place where they don’t concede many goals, gone behind twice and got ourselves back into the game which shows that the players have got character but if we take our chances then the game’s over at half-time and that was what we spoke about.
“I expected us to start the second half better than we did. We concede a goal but the players have dug in, we scored a great second goal so lots of positives but also things that we can get better at.”
Miller took his total to four for the season with his second brace for the club since joining on loan from Barnsley.
Taylor was impressed with Miller’s header in the second half but feels the forward should have scored more on the day.
“It’s a great header but it should have been more not could have been more. It’s not the first time I’ve stood here – George knows this and it’s not a criticism but he should score more goals.
“It’s a fantastic header, great ball from Hayden, good movement – he gets across his man and we haven’t done that often enough or well enough.
“He has a great opportunity in the first half and decides, in my opinion and in his opinion, he takes wrong option but since he’s come to the football club George has scored four goals and we’re creating so many chances so if I look at the things for us to work on, we’ve got to be far more ruthless in the oppositions box.”
