Walsall will head to the VPS Community Stadium for the first time to take on Sutton United on Saturday.

The Saddlers will be aiming for back-to-back away wins after notching their first win on the road this season against Oldham Athletic on their last trip.

Sutton have made a strong start to life in the EFL since their promotion from the National League.

We take a closer look at Sutton in our opposition guide.

Matt Gray will forever be remembered at Gander Green Lane for guiding Sutton United to the EFL for the first time in their history.

He began his coaching career following his retirement as a player.

Gray had spells as assistant manager at Eastleigh, Crawley Town and Aldershot Town.

In December 2018, he joined Sutton as a coach.

Following the departure of Paul Doswell in April 2019, Gray was appointed as interim manager before landing the job on a permanent basis on May 1st 2019.

Sutton finished 15th in his first season following the points per game calculation.

Last season proved to be a successful one as he guided Sutton to the title by a four-point margin and a historic promotion to the EFL where he’s made a strong start to the 2021/22 campaign.

 

TOP SCORERS

Donovan Wilson and Alistair Smith are Sutton’s joint top scorers this season with four goals in all competitions.

Wilson initially moved to Gander Green Lane on loan from Bath City towards the back end of last season and scored seven times in 16 appearances.

He began his career at Bristol Rovers before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers where he featured four times, scoring once.

He has also represented Port Vale, Jumilla, Exeter City, Burgos and Macclesfield Town.

Smith joined in the summer for an undisclosed fee from National League side Altrincham and has made a positive start in South-West London.

 

ONES TO WATCH

Sutton have some exciting attackers in their ranks.

Isaac Olaofe, on loan from Championship side Millwall, has three goals to his name so far this season.

He is enjoying second spell on loan at Gander Green Lane having played a key role in helping the Us to promotion by scoring 14 goals in the National League.

Other key players include David Ajiboye who has three goals and three assists while Robert Milsom brings vital experience and has provided four assists.

Sutton returned to winning ways with a 3-1 win over Colchester United on Tuesday after losing back-to-back league games for the first time this season.

They have won seven of their last nine matches in all competitions.

Their home record is strong having lost just twice at Gander Green Lane in seven matches this campaign.

Sutton are sixth with 23 points while the Saddlers are 14th with 17.

Tomorrow’s match will be the first meeting between the two clubs.

They are the 136th different team the Saddlers will have faced in the EFL.
