Saddlers working hard on ways to make it click says Gordon

30 March 2021

Walsall striker Josh Gordon says the team are working hard to make things click.

The Saddlers have endured a disappointing run of form but will be looking to build on back-to-back draws when they take on Harrogate Town on Friday.

Gordon’s cross set up Caolan Lavery’s equaliser against Grimsby Town on Saturday and he explained that the squad are working on different things to try and get more results.

“We’ve just been trying to find the right methods for us like trying different shapes, different personnel and seeing what we can do to make it click and (on Saturday) we had a plan,” he explained.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be pretty. Going into the next games where we’ll be able to be more football sided, we’ll be able to do that but on Saturday we stuck to what we wanted to do, we got crosses into the box and Lavs gets his goal from my cross and we get a point from the game.

“I know when you look at the table and you see Southend and Grimsby down there and you think they’re guaranteed wins, it’s the complete opposite. They’ve got nothing to lose, they’re going to come out gung-ho and try and get as much as they can out of the game.

"We’ve just got to shut up shop and not come away from these games without a point. It would have been nice to get the win but we got the point and we were solid so now we can move on to Harrogate.”

After falling behind at Blundell Park, the Saddlers responded well and got themselves back in game.

Gordon felt the team showed strong mentality to come from behind and hopes that having shown that mentality against Grimsby, the team will now be able to show it on a more consistent basis.

“I think it has shown in glimpses in games,” Gordon said.

“In the Exeter game where we kept a clean sheet and then we went to Cambridge where we did well so it’s been there so it’s been there, it just hasn’t been there all the time.

“Hopefully this will help us turn the corner against Harrogate.”
