Saddlers Head Coach Matthew Taylor is looking forward to his side taking on League One side Doncaster Rovers in a challenging tie in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
The draw for the first round was made on Thursday afternoon and Taylor’s side will welcome Richie Wellens and Doncaster to the Banks’s Stadium in the week before the first home Sky Bet League Two fixture against Forest Green Rovers.
“It’s great for us that we have got a home tie in the first round of the Carabao Cup against a team in a higher division that ours,” said Taylor.
“Doncaster Rovers will offer us a really challenging test right at the start of the season and it will be a really good occasion for us.
“With that draw happening, it now means we have three home games in a row at the start of the season after the opener against Tranmere Rovers and I’m really looking forward to seeing the team play in front of a home crowd.”
Alongside the Carabao Cup draw, the draw for the Papa Johns Trophy was also made with Brighton and Hove Albion Under 21s joining the Saddlers in Group D alongside Forest Green and Northampton Town.
“We have also been drawn against Forest Green Rovers, Northampton Town and Brighton and Hove Albion Under 21s in the Papa Johns Trophy,” Taylor continued.
“All three of our opponents will provide us with a different test, especially Brighton and they will be a bit of an unknown quantity to us, but they’re tests that I am really looking forward to.”
