Saddlers snap up Zak Mills

8 July 2021

Walsall Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of defender Zak Mills on a one-year contract.

The 29-year-old joins the Saddlers following his departure from Port Vale.

Mills arrives with a wealth of experience in Sky Bet League Two having represented a handful of clubs in the division.

He began his career at Histon in non-league before moving to Boston United in 2014

The defender made the step up to the EFL in 2016 when he joined Grimsby Town. He featured 66 times at Blundell Park before he joined Morecambe in 2018.

Mills played a key part in helping the Shrimps climb away from relegation trouble to finish 18th in the 2018-19 season and went on to win the club’s Supporters’ Player of the Year award.

He left Mazuma Stadium that summer and signed for Oldham Athletic. He made 29 appearances for the Latics but left after one season before his move to Vale Park in 2020.

Mills is looking forward to linking up with his new teammates and is pleased to get the move completed.

“I’m over the moon,” he said.

“It got done quite quickly, I met the manager and decided that I want to be part of this journey.

“I want to bring everything I can to the team. First and foremost, I’m a defender, I like to get forward if I can but any value I can add to a successful team is what I’m hoping to achieve here.”

Saddlers Head Coach Matthew Taylor is also pleased with his latest acquisition.

“Zak is a fantastic character. He’s someone who came into the professional game late and he has huge hunger to be successful himself and be part of a successful team.

“I like the fact Zak can play in more than one position, he gives us options at the back, and he’s a very capable defender in all situations so I’m extremely happy to have him and looking forward to working with him on a daily basis.”

The transfer is subject to EFL and FA Clearance.
