Jules: "It's always nice to get on the scoresheet"

18 January 2021

Walsall defender Zak Jules was pleased to score his first league goal for the club but admitted he was disappointed that the team didn’t come away with three points against Oldham Athletic at the weekend.

Jules opened the scoring against the Latics but Davis Keillor-Dunn’s strike saw the visitors take home a share of the spoils.

The 23-year-old’s shot was cleared by a defender but the linesman adjudged the ball to have crossed the line.

Jules was in no doubt that the ball had crossed the line and he was pleased to get on the scoresheet.

“As soon as I hit it, I ran off and I was in no doubt,” Jules said.

“The angle that I was, I could see it get behind the post so I was 100% certain and just waiting for the ref to blow.

“It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet, just a bit disappointed that it didn’t lead to a home win but it’s a point on the board although I’d say it’s definitely two points dropped from my perspective and the rest of the squad’s perspective.”

The Saddlers are back in action this evening as they travel to the Mazuma Stadium to take on Morecambe.

Jules is expecting a difficult game but felt it was key the Saddlers ended their losing run ahead of a run of three consecutive away trips.

“I think it was key for confidence more than anything,” Jules commented.

“It’s quite easy when you have a few defeats to get caught in a bit of a rut so I think it’s definitely given us a bit more belief. We had a two week break to pull ourselves together and go again. We’ve got another game (tonight) so it’s another opportunity to go out there and grab a win.

“I think we’ve got five games in a two week period so there’s a lot of points up for grabs in a short space of time so we’re remaining positive.

“It will be a tough game, it will be a long journey up there. They’re not doing too bad themselves, they’re having quite a good season so far.

“We know it will be a tough game but every game in the league is always tough whether you’re playing bottom of the league or top of the league, you’re never going to just turn up and win the game so we know we’ve got to roll our sleeves up and be in for a battle.”
