Melbourne: "I just want to improve myself as a player

8 February 2021

New signing Max Melbourne is looking to test himself during his loan stint at the Banks’s Stadium.

The defender joined on loan from League One high flyers Lincoln City on transfer deadline day and will be hoping to make his debut against Mansfield Town tomorrow evening.

The 22-year-old is aiming to play as many games as possible to help the Saddlers reach their targets and hopes to learn and improve during his time at the club.

“I am looking to gain some more experience from this loan move,” he said.

“I just want to improve myself as a player. I’ll be in a different environment which is going to test me in different ways. It’s going to be an all-round different experience and I am looking to test myself.

“Everyone in this industry wants to play as many games as possible and me being 22, that’s exactly what I want to do, I want to play as many games as possible.

“It’s a loan experience with the chance to play 20 games or so, I’ll take that all day.

“I have always been a firm believer in taking every game as it comes so I will be looking to try and get a shirt for Tuesday’s game and then hopefully I can maintain it.”

Following the departure of Zak Jules to MK Dons and George Nurse’s return to parent club Bristol City, Melbourne looks set to compete with Callum Cockerill-Mollett for a place at left back.

The former West Bromwich Albion man revealed he can contribute both in defence and attack and also play in a variety of roles.

I am a versatile player who can play centre back, left back and I can play the left side of a back three as well,” he explained.

“I am a quick, athletic player that is technical with the ball but then again knows how to do his stay at home defending and also likes to join in an attack.”

Melbourne could be involved when the Saddlers host Mansfield Town tomorrow night.
