Report: Reserves fall to defeat against Fleetwood

15 December 2021

Three second half goals saw a youthful Walsall Reserve side fall to defeat against Fleetwood Town on Tuesday afternoon.

Max McMillen, Ben Thompson and Danny Edwards struck for the visitors as they took control in the second period.

There were no goals in a closely contested first half between the two sides.

Fleetwood had the first clear cut opportunity of the afternoon as McMillen fired in a shot that cannoned off the post.

The Saddlers came close on 33 minutes when Antonio Christofaro tried his luck from distance but his effort just trickled wide.

Chris Conn-Clarke almost opened the scoring for the Cod Army five minutes before the break but he dragged an arrowed low shot wide and the half ended goalless.

Fleetwood got their noses in front six minutes into the second half when McMillen netted from close range.

The second came 11 minutes later when Thompson’s acrobatic volley found the net.

They added a third with 18 minutes go when substitute Danny Edwards slotted the ball in from close range on the rebound after his initial attempt was well saved by Zac Hedge.

Mat Sadler’s Walsall kept pushing and looked to add a consolation goal but Fleetwood stood firm and kept a clean sheet as they claimed victory.
