Walsall forward Kieran Phillips was delighted to score his first professional goal on Tuesday night although he was disappointed it wasn’t enough to secure three points.
The 21-year-old opened the scoring with an instinctive finish against Scunthorpe United but the Saddlers had to settle for a point as Alfie Beestin equalised in the 90th minute.
Despite the frustrating result, Phillips was still pleased to open his account for the Saddlers and enjoyed the moment.
“I was ecstatic really,” Phillips said.
“I saw it hit the back of the net and everyone jumped out of their seats, then the lads came over as well. It’s my first one and I’m absolutely buzzing.
“It’s exactly what you dream about when you’re younger with all the fans jumping off their seats, it gives you such a buzz so hopefully I can have more of them this season.”
While Matt Taylor’s side didn’t get the victory they wanted, they are off the mark for the new season having picked up a point.
Phillips is keen to build on it when Walsall travel to Hartlepool United this weekend having felt the team deserved more from Tuesday’s match.
“I think we definitely deserved the three points so everyone’s disappointed with how the game ended,” he commented.
“I think we dominated throughout but we’ve got to take our chances and in the key moments, manage the game a bit better.
“It’s just disappointing really, we’ve got to learn from it and luckily we’ve got another game on Saturday where, hopefully, we can take the three points.
“It’s progress, it’s our first point on the board and you’re not going to turn them away. We’d have loved to have all three but, on the night, it just wasn’t meant to be.”
