Match Report: Walsall 1-1 Scunthorpe United

17 August 2021

The Saddlers picked up their first point of the 2021/22 Sky Bet League Two season as Matt Taylor’s side drew 1-1 with Scunthorpe United.

It was a really encouraging performance from the Saddlers who reacted well to Saturday’s defeat against Forest Green Rovers.

Inside the opening three minutes, Brendan Kiernan hung a ball up to the back post where Kieran Phillips was waiting but his looping header was just wide of the far post.

Despite the bright and controlling start for Taylor’s side, it was United who would have the next chance as George Taft lifted a ball to the back post and the on rushing Jai Rowe met it cleanly but his header was wide of Carl Rushworth’s near post.

With seven minutes to play in the first half, Conor Wilkinson tried his luck on the volley from 30-yards out but his dipping effort was millimetres wide of Rory Watson’s right hand post.

Moments before the half time whistle was blown, Ash Taylor met an inviting Jack Earring corner but unfortunately for the defender, his header went inches over the bar.

The Saddlers started the second half perfectly as Kieran Phillips was in the right place at the right time to turn home a scuffed shot from Kiernan, with the on loan Huddersfield Town striker scoring his first ever professional goal.

It wasn’t then until the 90th minute that the next chance came and that was the sucker punch for the Saddlers as the visitors equalised at the death.

A cross from the right wasn’t cleared and it fell to Alfie Beestin 10-yards out and he poked the ball past Rushworth to make sure the away side left the Banks’s Stadium with a point.
