Walsall Head Coach Brian Dutton is looking to tomorrow’s trip to Scunthorpe United and is eyeing a reaction to the previous two defeats.
After a six-match unbeaten run, the Saddlers have since suffered back-to-back defeats against Colchester United and Salford City.
Dutton is hoping to see a response from his side in what he expects to be another difficult match against a side a place behind them in the table.
“Tough game,” said Dutton.
“They’re in a position where they’re not safe, as we’re not so it will be two teams going at it, locking horns, fighting and doing everything they can to win a game of football for their club.
“It’s going to be difficult and our lads have got to go into it with the correct mentality.
“We’re looking forward to it. We look forward to a reaction, I thought I’d have had my reaction against Salford but we didn’t have that so I’m looking forward to our next fixture which is Scunthorpe and seeing that immediate reaction.
“The lads have been great in terms of the fight and the spirit, to a man they’ve been excellent and haven’t let themselves down. They have let themselves down in the Salford fixture and the Salford fixture.”
Since Dutton took charge, the Saddlers have kept five clean sheets, a habit the Saddlers boss is keen to restore quickly.
He also stressed the importance of the first goal in games and believes keeping things tight defensively will give the team a good platform.
“The first goal is massive because we’re not free-flowing or scoring loads of goals,” Dutton explained.
“It’s important that we keep a clean sheet or we keep it down to at the most one to give us the opportunity to equalise and to go back ahead in the game. We can only do that through diligent and strong defending, we can’t gift wrap teams goals and that’s what we did in the previous fixture.”
