Brian Dutton gives his thoughts on Salford defeat

21 April 2021

Walsall Head Coach Brian Dutton was disappointed with his team’s performance against Salford City last night.

The Ammies scored a goal in each half as the Saddlers struggled to get a foothold at the Banks’s Stadium.

Dutton admitted his team’s performance lacked character and wasn’t happy with the display.

“It was men against boys out there,” he said.

“They out duelled us, beat us up and we showed no character or personality whatsoever. It took up until the 90th minute before I saw a defender trust a midfielder, pass it to him, him receive it on the back foot, play a quality ball in behind and we nearly scored off it with Tyreik Wright and it’s took until the 90th minute to see that.

“Last night was the chance to put it right, the previous performance against Colchester wasn’t good enough. Last night was the opportunity for lads to show their character but they didn’t show that, they showed a lack of personality, a lack of character and that’s why we’re in the situation we’re in where we’ve had to limp over the line to avoid being relegated.

“Without Rory Holden in the team, there’s no personality in terms of getting on the ball, being creative and showing courage. There are glimpses from other guys but as a team, we’re reliant on Rory Holden.”

The Saddlers now turn their attention to Saturday’s trip to Scunthorpe and the game will be shown live on iFollow.
