Kinsella: "I want to be successful"

17 September 2020

Walsall midfielder Liam Kinsella is confident the club can have a successful season and hopes to be involved in as many games as possible.

The Saddlers have made a promising start to the 2020-21 campaign with two draws (with a penalty shootout defeat and victory respectively) in cup competitions against higher opposition and a victory in their first league outing against Grimsby Town.

There’s plenty of competition for places in the team, particularly in midfielder where Kinsella, Alfie Bates, Stuart Sinclair, Danny Guthrie, Sam Perry and Joe Willis all battling to get on the field.

Kinsella played 40 times for the Saddlers last season and wants to improve on that tally this campaign, having started in all three matches so far.

"Every season I want to play as much as I can and play more than last season,” Kinsella said.

"I want to be successful and go into the season being a successful team and I feel like we can do that with the bunch of lads we have.

"There's competition for places all over the pitch and wherever you're playing it pushes you to be that next level.

"They're (Sinclair and Guthrie) coming back from knocks now so there's a lot of competition for places.

"If you play you have to play well because you know someone is breathing down your neck to take the shirt.”

Darrell Clarke’s side will be looking to build on their success against Grimsby Town when they take on Harrogate Town in Doncaster on Saturday.

Kinsella has been impressed with what he has seen of Harrogate so far but insists confidence is high in the Walsall camp and they are ready for the challenge.

"To be newly promoted and winning 4-0 (on the opening day), you look at it,” he said.

"I watched them against West Brom and they put on a really good performance so we're expecting a good battle against them, we'll see what happens.

"They look a good team, solid. But we're confident in ourselves and confident we can go there and put on a performance.”
