McDonald looking to build on first goal of the season

1 October 2020

Walsall winger Wes McDonald is looking to kick on after netting his first goal of the 2020-21 campaign.

The 23-year-old struck to give the Saddlers the lead during Tuesday night’s EFL Trophy draw with Chelsea Under 21s.

McDonald has been pleased with how the team has started the new season and is now focused on building on his impressive showings from his first season at the Banks’s Stadium.

“Last season I had a decent season so I’m looking to crack on, improve with every game and try and push,” McDonald said.

“We’ve had two league games and we’ve come away with four points so it’s a good start. There’s a long way to go, we’d have liked to have six points but four points, we’ll take that.”

The Saddlers were left frustrated on Tuesday night as Dynel Simeu cancelled out McDonald’s goal before Chelsea Under 21s won the penalty shootout.

Despite his frustration with the result after creating so many chances, McDonald was pleased with his goal and highlighted his good on-field relationship with Elijah Adebayo as a big factor.

“I’ve got a good connection with Elijah on and off the pitch so I know when he’s in those sorts of areas I can link off him so I’m grateful to get off the mark for the season,” he explained.

“I work a lot in training coming in off the left and getting shots off so I’m glad that one went in.

“I think we came out the traps pretty quick, we pressed high and that was our game plan to catch them on the break because we know that they are a possession-based side. I thought we created a lot of chances but we just didn’t take them.”

Darrell Clarke’s side now turn their attention to Saturday’s trip to Forest Green Rovers in Sky Bet League Two.
