Scarr: "We've got to be better"

16 November 2020

Walsall defender Dan Scarr has called on the team to take responsibility and perform better after Saturday’s defeat to Southend United.

Emile Acquah’s late goal secured the Shrimpers victory on a frustrating afternoon for Darrell Clarke’s side that saw Elijah Adebayo hit the crossbar from the penalty spot.

Scarr insists the players must do better and start creating their own luck on the pitch.

“We keep saying it, we should have more points on the board from the games we’ve had but if the luck isn’t going your way then you’ve got to create your own luck," Scarr said.

"We've just got to be better. There’s no two ways about it, we’ve got to be better if we want to do well in this league.

“You’ve got to take it to teams, you’ve got to be better on the ball, you’ve got to be better defensively and you can’t have the sloppy mistakes. We’ve got to take responsibility.

“I think sometimes we lack that someone to take hold of the game and take it to them and we just need to be better.”

The Saddlers have suffered three consecutive defeats in all competitions but Scarr insists the team are still confident and believe in their ability as a group.

“We do believe in ourselves,” he commented.

“We know we’re a good team. When we've played some of the better sides, we’ve run all over them so we know what we’re capable of and I think we’re a good team.

“We’re strong, we’re good going forward, we get chances and we don’t let teams score a lot of goals so all the signs are there, we just need to be that little bit more ruthless.”

The Saddlers now turn their attentions to this Saturday’s trip to Cheltenham Town.
