Going Down The Wednesbury Road - Chris Sheldon shares his memories

19 June 2020

Our Going Down The Wednesbury Road feature gives Saddlers fans the opportunity to share their experiences with other fans from their time supporting the club.

In our latest upload, we caught up with Saddlers fan Chris Sheldon, who reveals that his first visit to the Banks's Stadium was when he was just three-years-old!

What was your first ever game at the Banks’s Stadium?

Weirdly not a Walsall game, it was England B vs Switzerland B at the Bescot on 20th May 1991, I was three!

What is the best game you’ve seen at the Banks’s Stadium?

Has to be Walsall 4-1 West Brom, glorious weather, full house, and the probably the best performance and goals from any Walsall game I have ever seen.

Who is the most talented Saddlers player you’ve seen at the Banks’s Stadium?

It has to be Paul Merson. He'd just got Portsmouth into the Premier League and he looked a class above throughout the seasons he played for us. Unfortunately it didn't workout here for him as a manager.

Who is your favourite ever Walsall player?

Difficult one, so many have been my favourite over the years because of their own individual skills.

I would have to go for Jorge Leitao. He wore the shirt with pride every game, gave 100% every minute, and scored some really good and important goals over a 5 year period, notably when we knocked Charlton out of the FA Cup.
