Guthrie: 'We need to be strong mentally'

31 January 2020

Walsall midfielder Danny Guthrie says the Saddlers need to show a strong mentality as they look to get back to winning ways against Crewe Alexandra tomorrow.

The Saddlers will be aiming to bounce back from recent defeats to Carlisle United and Morecambe against a Crewe side who are eyeing automatic promotion this season.

Guthrie is keen to get on the front foot quickly on Saturday and feels the team need to dig deep.

“We need to be strong mentally now,” he said.

“It was a tough loss the other day and Saturday’s a tough game but you always look forward to playing at home, get on the front foot and that’s what we have to do.

“We have to start games really well and give our fans something to get behind, we’re going to need them on Saturday.”

The Railwaymen are third in League Two, 11 places above the Saddlers. Despite the number of places between the two sides, Guthrie is expecting a close game and is looking forward to facing them at the Banks’s.

“I always enjoy playing at home, I like the added pressure that you have at home where you have to take the game to the other team so it’s the perfect opportunity for us to get back on track against a team that’s up there so we can measure ourselves,” he added.

“They are but as I’ve seen this year, there’s not a lot between any of the teams when you play them. It was a pretty even game the other night, Morecambe have been struggling for most of the season but they gave as good as they’ve got the other night and it’s the same when we play teams above us.

“They’re a lot of points ahead of us but when you play them, there isn’t too much difference between the two teams so it’s very fine margins.”
