Match Report: Walsall 1-2 Crewe Alexandra

1 February 2020

Walsall slipped to their third consecutive defeat as Crewe Alexandra came from behind to win at the Banks’s Stadium.

Caolan Lavery gave the Saddlers a deserved first-half lead but second half goals from Daniel Powell and Oli Finney saw the visitors complete the turnaround.

Darrell Clarke made three changes to the team that lost to Morecambe.

Liam Kinsella, Shay Facey and Rory Holden came in for Elijah Adebayo, Cameron Norman and Danny Guthrie.

The Saddlers made a bright start and had an early chance through Shay Facey after a nice move involving Josh Gordon and Lavery.

Walsall made the breakthrough after 15 minutes when a throw-in came in and was flicked on by Gordon into the path of Lavery who slid the ball under the Will Jaaskelainen to net his 10th of the season.

The hosts continued to push in the first half and had another decent chance on 26 minutes when Holden’s low free-kick came out to Nathan Sheron who struck it first time but his effort trickled wide.

Walsall were dominant in what was an excellent first half display.

Crewe improved in the second half and drew level after 50 minutes when Harry Pickering’s corner was helped on by Perry Ng into the path of Powell who stabbed home from close range.

The visitors came close on 64 minutes when Chuma Anene’s downward header forced Liam Roberts into making a save low to his right.

The Railwaymen turned the game on its head on 67 minutes when Ryan Wintle switched it to Kirk who headed it through to Finney who found the bottom corner.

Crewe grew in confidence and had further chances through Wintle and Jones.

The Saddlers couldn’t find a late leveller and will now turn their attention to next weekend’s trip to Forest Green Rovers.
